There was a time when tile was the quiet, practical choice — something you picked quickly and forgot about. Those days are long gone. Today, tile is the bold protagonist of kitchen and bathroom design, and the trends emerging in 2024 are nothing short of extraordinary. At Precision Flooring & Design in Norcross, GA, we've been watching these trends evolve, and we're excited to share the ones that are turning ordinary rooms into magazine-worthy spaces.
The Rise of Large-Format Tiles
If you haven't noticed, tiles are getting bigger — much bigger. Large-format tiles, some measuring 24x48 inches or even larger, are dominating modern kitchens and bathrooms. The appeal is simple: fewer grout lines mean a cleaner, more seamless look. These oversized tiles create an illusion of expansiveness, making even compact bathrooms feel open and luxurious. Paired with a rectified edge for minimal grout joints, large-format porcelain tiles deliver a sleek, contemporary aesthetic that homeowners are falling in love with.
Handmade and Artisan Looks
On the opposite end of the spectrum, there's a growing hunger for tiles that look imperfect, organic, and handcrafted. Zellige-inspired tiles with their slightly uneven surfaces and subtle color variations are appearing on backsplashes and shower walls across the country. These tiles catch light differently across each piece, creating a shimmering, dimensional effect that machine-made tiles simply cannot replicate. They bring soul to a space, reminding us that beauty often lives in imperfection.
Wood-Look Porcelain: The Best of Both Worlds
Homeowners who adore the warmth of hardwood but need the water resistance of tile are turning to wood-look porcelain in record numbers. Today's technology has made these tiles remarkably realistic, with grain patterns, knots, and texture that fool even the most discerning eyes. They're perfect for bathrooms, laundry rooms, and kitchens where real wood would be vulnerable to moisture damage. You get the aesthetic warmth without the worry.
Bold Patterns and Encaustic Revival
Geometric patterns, Moroccan-inspired motifs, and encaustic cement tiles are making powerful comebacks. These patterned tiles are being used as statement floors in bathrooms, entryway focal points, and eye-catching kitchen backsplashes. The key to using them effectively is balance — pair a bold patterned tile with simple, neutral surroundings to let the design breathe and command attention.
Textured Tiles for Safety and Style
Texture is no longer just functional. Textured tiles with three-dimensional surfaces, rippled finishes, and carved details are adding tactile interest to walls and floors alike. In showers and wet areas, textured tiles provide essential slip resistance while elevating the entire design.
Color Confidence
While whites and grays remain popular, 2024 is seeing homeowners embrace color with renewed confidence. Deep forest greens, rich navy blues, warm terracottas, and even soft blush pinks are making appearances in tile selections.
